Insurance Underwriting Specialist

After graduating from Brentwood in 2005, Tom attended the University of Victoria to study Chemistry. After two years it was discovered that chemistry might not be his passion and he switched to the Social Sciences where he later graduated with a degree in Economics in 2010.

Entering the working world Tom didn’t know what he wanted to do. Coming off the heels of the 2009 financial crisis the attitude at the time was “anything to pay the bills”.

After an arduous journey, Tom landed himself in the insurance industry and was introduced to a career in insurance underwriting. He started at the bottom of the barrel, handling small $500 commercial package policies to now managing international multi-million dollar portfolios. Tom feels there are many lessons to share about the business world that you can’t simply Google.

There isn’t a lot of education out there around the potential and glamour of the insurance industry, so Tom is attending the Career day to help spread awareness about this exciting field.

Tom believes the most important skill in the working world is “networking” and is excited to share his experiences and advice to the workforce of tomorrow.
