Paul was born and raised in New Westminster, BC, and attend Brentwood from grades 10-12, where he was Assistant Head Prefect, Captain of “Senior House” and winner of the Yarrow Shield in 1969.
After graduation, Paul went on to complete a BSc in Zoology from UBC and was then accepted into UBC’s medical school. He completed med school in 1980 and then went on to intern at the Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand. Later he completed a GP-Anesthesia course through UBC at Vancouver General Hospital.
Relocating to the island, he opened a full service Family Practice in Duncan, BC which he ran from 1983-2015. In addition to his family practice office, he also actively practiced in the local hospital in the areas of Anesthesia, Obstetrics and the ER.
In addition, Paul completed a Sports Medicine Diploma from the Canadian Academy of Sports & Exercise Medicine in 1993 and served as the Team Physician for the Cowichan Valley Capitals hockey team from 1992-2008. He also served as Physician at the BC, Canada and Commonwealth Games (Victoria 1994), Vancouver 2010 Olympics (Long Track Speed Skating), Canada U-19 Rugby at the Junior World Cups (2000-2006), and was CMO/Head Physician for Rugby Canada’s National Senior Men’s Team (2008-2015), attending two Rugby World Cups in 2011 and 2015.
Paul was also an active member of the World Rugby’s Work Group on Concussion from 2011-2015 and has sat on the Board of the Canadian Academy of Sports and Exercise Medicine since 2013 (President from 2017-18).
