Ed Ross

Sr. Project Manager, Trailmark Systems

Rogers '94

Senior Project Manager at Trailmark Systems

Ed graduated from Brentwood in 1994 and began an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering at Carelton University. Three years into this he decided to focus on what he enjoyed most in his studies – physics and math. He transferred to the University of Victoria and complete an undergraduate degree in astrophysics with a minor in math. During his time at UVic, Ed completed four co-op work terms at four different employers. This was a great way to test out different working environments.

After graduating from UVic in 2001, Ed wanted to get out into the working world full time so he started in a junior physicist role at a local scientific consulting company, ASL Environmental Sciences, who focused mostly on applied physical oceanography. Over the next 17 years, Ed slowly became an oceanographer through experience and picked up many more courses on software engineering and business administration.

In 2009, Ed and his family moved to France for one year to do graduate school in space studies. He moved back to Victoria after this and continued working in physical oceanography with a new appreciation for the application of earth observation to environmental monitoring.

In January 2019, wanting a change, Ed switched careers and took a project manager position at a geospatial software development company. This was a big shift – a fast paced environment in an organization that had recently been acquired and was undergoing large internal changes. This offered opportunities to hone his management skills and better understand the relevance of geospatial technologies.

Finally, in November 2019 Ed switched jobs again to join Trailmark Systems as a Senior Project Manager. Trailmark provides software and services for indigenous communities to develop community-based monitoring programs. This allows communities to collaborate in the management of wildlife and other natural resources, promote cultural sustainability through the integration of traditional knowledge, and build capacity for the health and wellbeing of community members.
