Currently working as the Arena Technical Manager for the National Hockey League. John graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Sociology.

John grew up in Ottawa, after completing high school, John attended St Lawrence college in Kingston graduating with a Diploma in Behavioural Sciences. After graduation John worked for the Children’s Aid Society in many capacities including group home for at risk kids, as well as group homes for children with disabilities.

This is where life and career took a turn for John into the technology space. He began the next phase of his career working for a large consulting company in their telecom department programming internal telecommunication devices. From there he joined a start up Fiber Optic testing equipment company and moved to Vancouver to become their Sales Engineer on the west coast.  And then…another pivot in his career.

For 12 years John sold Real Estate in Vancouver, which was a great profession that provided awesome flexibility for him to raise his growing young family. Looking for a new challenge as the kids were older John apprenticed as an electrician for a year and a half. During that time he volunteered at the World Juniors, Memorial Cup, and the Olympics and he also began working for the NHL as an off ice official.

A few twists and turns later and John has landed his dream job as the head of the NHL technology in Vancouver and Seattle for the NHL.  What does that mean and how does that effect the game you watch on TV? What does a day in the life look like for John and how much technology is there in the buildings?

His path was definitely not a straight path to where he is today but most paths aren’t…at least the fun one’s have turns in them.
