RCMP Proactive Recruitment

Cpl. Stewart MASI

Royal Canadian Mounted Police

NCO i/c Proactive Recruiting

I have been a member of the RCMP for 16 years. I started my policing career at the Oceanside detachment, Parksville/Qualicum Beach from 2006-2011. From there, I went to the Gang Task Force, now CFSEU-BC Gang Enforcement from 2011-2022. Currently I am the Corporal in charge of Proactive Recruiting.

I completed my post secondary education at Western Michigan University on a football scholarship and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education and History.  I went on to play one season in the CFL in 1995.  I then became a professional wrestler and a high school teacher before becoming an RCMP officer at the age of 36.   I joined the RCMP because I wanted to serve my country and make a difference in the community.

Cst. Shawn COURTORIELLE

Royal Canadian Mounted Police

RCMP Proactive Recruiter

I have been a police officer for 23 years. I started my career in Burns Lake, BC and did a wide variety of police jobs throughout BC, including General Duty policing, Protective Services, Uniform and Plain clothes Investigator within the Provincial Gang Unit (CFSEU-BC).

I was a Summer Student with the RCMP for three summers before completing a Criminal Justice Diploma at Lethbridge College at the age of 20.  I joined the RCMP at the age of 22, following the footsteps of my father and brother. I am Metis and was born and raised in a northern community in Alberta.  I have always wanted to make a difference in the Indigenous communities.  In my first posting, I policed six First Nation communities and felt that I was successful at making a difference with the people.

Depot Experience:

The RCMP Training Academy (Depot) is located in Regina, Saskatchewan.  All candidates must complete 6 months of rigorous training in Applied Police Sciences, Firearms, Police Driving, Police Defensive Tactics, Fitness & lifestyle, and Drill & Deportment.   When the training is complete, you will become a police officer and be posted anywhere in Canada.  You will work with a Field Coach for the first 6 months before starting your career on your own.

RCMP Training:

As a police officer you have many opportunities to continue learning with specialized courses, geared towards whatever path you wish to go within the RCMP.  Both Stewart and I have completed numerous mandatory and skilled courses that helped us gain the experience of working in the provincial gang unit (CFSEU).  This experience allowed us to understand the gang life and how diverse gangs are in Canada, compared to other gangs in North America.
