Freelance Journalist & Photographer

Annika Hammerschlag is a freelance journalist and photographer based in Dakar, Senegal where she covers issues related to social justice and the environment. Her bylines include The New York Times, The BBC, The Guardian, Al Jazeera English and many others.

After graduating from Brentwood in 2008 she returned to her native California to attend UCLA. While studying abroad in India her junior year she realized she wanted to become a journalist. Her university, however, did not offer a journalism major, so she successfully petitioned to create her own and began working as a photojournalist for her student newspaper.

She received her master's degree from Columbia Journalism School in 2016 and shortly thereafter began working as a staff beat reporter and photographer for a USA Today Network newspaper in Florida. There she covered the run-up to the 2016 election, the presidential inauguration in D.C., the aftermath of the Parkland shooting and Hurricane Irma. She followed Betsy DeVos on her numerous trips to South Florida, covered daily education stories and completed many investigative projects.

After more than two years in Florida she left to freelance in West Africa. She’s been in Dakar for almost two years and has covered everything from animal conservation to Islamic extremism. She works in all mediums: writing, radio, photo and video.

Her photography portfolio and reporting clips can be found at https://ahammerschlag.com.
